But this is due to the reason that the life have been quite calm here in Fulda and I have not experienced or learnt something new which I would like to share with you.
Nevertheless, I "pimped" my blog and added a cool map of visitors to it. To all those of you, who have a blog, I would recommend visiting this page and register your blogs. The idea of the map is really appealing and puts you and your friends under a pressure of checking your blog :-). At least, you can monitor, who has been keen on hearing from you.
The latest news from Fulda is a HonkyTonk Kneipen Festival in Fulda held last Friday. Almost all major entertainment places, Kneipen of Fulda were participating in it, and had live music played. It costed 10 euros and one could visit all of them and listen and dance to the music played by various bands, Rocknroll, 60s, 70s, 80s music and etc. The entrance costs were a bit high, which I guess me, Michael and some others managed to compensate by collecting some Pfandflaschen around :D. I know it sounds quite pathetic and gross. But c'est l'avi, students can never reject going out, even when the costs are so biteful. All in all it was a good evening.

Success to all with your theses and see you soon!

Who do you look like?

Hahaha! Magazine is full of dicturbing pictures and articles not only about people fleeing from persecution in their homecountry, but also suffering from persecution in the countries, where they received asylum seeker's status. Stories are from all over the world, many countries and regions. I just mention one of the random articles. It is a story of asylum seeking family from Turkmenistan in the city of Leeds, who were hospitalized after some local person unleashed his three dogs shouting "Go, go,go". The child injured was ten years old. A photo that is very disturbing is that of an African would be migrant or refugee lying dead on a beach while there are people sunbathing, watching and not stirring a finger to help. To my very big surprise last week there was an article on the CNN, which friend Veronica forwarded to me, telling about Angelina Jolie's comments on that same photo. (What a coincidence!:-) Everyone knows she is a goodwill ambassador of the UNHCR, UN agency for refugees, and that same photo caused anger of hers.
So i just thought, why not to publish that photo, as long as i have the magazine with me and all of us were so much interested in the European issues in the course of our studies.

Please "enjoy".

Firdavs

I should check my liver...some day

Hello Everyone!
First written 10 days ago:
Just another short note of what I was doing lately. Last week was the last one for Rosa Alba, an intern from Italy I was working with in the same room. So, to show respect (cause she is from Sicily:-), we went out to Maria Roses, a small disco-bar with a good music. Because me and Veronica, a good friend from the US doing internship at the UN and simply a smart one, sat longer in the UN bar sipping cheap white wine and beer, we got to the place a bit later. We were a bit drunk, as usual, and forgot about the paper with directions and phone numbers on it, so, it took us a good one hour walk to join the others. The funniest thing was to ask for wrong directions from a taxi-driver, who got us home on the previous weekend. Vienna could not be that small! Eventually, after Veronica took over the lead, and went into Marriott hotel, where she used her women tricks and charms and got a whole map with the exact location of the bar, we soon joined other interns and got a round of tequila from our flatmate and a nice guy, Nicolas. Apparently, the drink I should not have drunk. It is a drink I have very bad relations with. Then, we danced in the basement, where actual disco is located, and I almost got my eyebrows burnt. I was at the bar, and the barmen were whistling like mad, and making gestures as if saying - Get the hell outta here! - how could I have known that they are trying to set a fire on the bar? Good that I was pulled back at the very last moment. Otherwise, the bar could have had a free kebab party that night. And a half-naked girl that came later on the bar could be dancing vicious cannibal dances around a good cooked Firdavs meat. Anyway, I liked the bar very much. It has a good music and atmosphere, good expensive drinks and cocktails. Another hint from me.
And on Sunday, me, Nicolas, and Veronica went to Schoenbruen Palace after being almost two months in Vienna. It is one of those big tourist attraction sites, one has to visit while in Vienna. For its beautiful 1441 rooms, a museum, gardens and the zoo. The Kaiser tried to build a "modest one" palace that would look like the one in Versailles. He did a good job. It is indeed magnificient, especially the gardens. I also liked feeding squirrels in the park. These squirrels are not afraid of people, cause people keep on feeding them with nuts, which is then eventually stolen by evil crows.

Last week's adventures:
Last week on Friday I went to the UN bar with all the other interns, as it is a normal thing to do for us, that is assemble, socialize and drink cheap drinks. I don't usually go to the UN bar during the week, because I am always tired and then I have my Arabic courses I am doing for fun (It is indeed fun to go to these courses, first-because they are for free, second-because it gave me more self-esteem after I was put into the Group 7, which is the highest they have to offer (though for me to start speaking Arabic I need to go through 3 more groups at least :- )). Anyway, back to the UN bar. I was supposed to have a couple of drinks, then to go for the dinner with some Japanese interns, unfortunately i was late by 15 minutes, and they were gone already, I wonder if they were fasting, not to be able to wait 15 minutes. What-What? It is mere 15 minutes people! So after waiting for 30 minutes at the place, I went to join the other interns for clubbing. Of course, I had nothing to eat, and then we went to the famous second ring, where you have a lot of disco-bars under the bridge where actually the underground trains run. We did 5 discos in one night! Soft rock, Hard Rock, chicka-por-favor-kind-one, techno and then i-dont-remember-anymore one. Closer to morning we decided to take a taxi back home. I wish we just waited 15 minutes till the first U--bahn. When the timer in the taxi started showing more than 30 euros, Veronica and Nicholas got furious, and asked for the taxi-driver to stop immediately, saying he is cheating and then Veronica refused to pay any money. Taxi-driver started kinda shouting at her, she started shouting at him using nice f-words. Damn, i should have noted some of them down for future uses. I think she wanted him to beat her or something, because I was sure she was keen on having a big issue next day in the newspapers. I stayed rather calm...mine small fish. So, I simply followed our superpower Veronica, for another mile followed by the taxi. In the end that what was supposed to happen happened. Three police cars came in 10 minutes. Six policemen surrounded us. It was like in Hollywood films, but worse and real. I will be writing for my blog from the police cell, I was gonna say, but they turned out to be noisier than really tough. To be precise they even called for another taxi for us. Btw, I noticed how they changed when we started speaking English, smart of us. Though, I wish something really nasty would happen. Headlines: UN working American and her companions from African Golden Ghana and Muslim Communist Uzbekistan refused to pay for a cab or this kind of stuff (if you have better sounding headlines, plz, do leave in the comments :-). Next day was horrible, because I woke up around one o'clock and remembered that I have not been eating for 24 hours and only drinking. I was sick, my hands were shaking. I was simply done. It is the only time you wish you were dead and did not suffer. Even a glass fell off my hands and broke in IKEA families-only-cafeteria, causing me a big embarrassment in front of a bunch of kids, who made the look I will never forget. Bloody adults...
After all that, the conclusions and decisions made were: not to go to the UN bar anymore, as its cheap prices are the source of all troubles. Not to go out at all. The Finnish do drink a lot. Hard rock discos are not for me. Avoid expensive Viennese taxis. Dont go to IKEA cafeteria. And in the light of the same conclusions made last week, TO KEEP STRONGLY IN LINE WITH THEM!
So that is all I wanted to report to you.

See you soon in Fulda!

Firdavs.

PS: Does anyone know a good room in Fulda? Good news is that I have internet at home again, as well as a room where to stay in October. Bad news is that I might have to pay a lot for my internet, due to limewire.
I should also mention that I, finally, tried kangaroo strips in cafeteria, I am sure it was hoping a day before with its baby inside. But I can tell, it found its rest on my plate, and eventually, in my stomach, which I very much enjoyed. Oh, I almost forgot that I also got my supervisor buy me cigarettes from duty free shop. I was spending a lot of money on that. So, now I will spend less money and more health as they cost me 4 times less than normally!!! But I beg you guys not to leave comments saying I have to quit it. If you want to know I am fine with my smoking, I feel to be like the last of Mohicans :-). Smokers are being discriminated lately. The public picture is being portrayed in such a bad image that smokers are worse than, say, gays (Easy? I am very well aware of my making a political statement here, you like it or not). By the way, I should also inform you that I went to Baden. It is a small town/village near Vienna, and it has 14 natural springs, where the Romans and Kaisers would chill out and rest. Of course, I did that too, though without a cigarette and wine glass in hand, despite much desired. After that I went to rock a party with old people in front of Council house, where Austrian traditional music was played by an orchestra, which in case of emergency, could easily change the beat of music to the funeral one, due to the age of listeners present. With due respect to all of them. Anyway, I found what I was searching for and tasted some kind of wine hybrid, called Sturm. This homemade substance is a sort of an under-fermented wine, which though, can still give some effect to feel dizzy, if consumed in larger amounts. I mixed it with some more beer, I bought on the way back to Vienna and might have even misbehaved in public. Don’t know how it started, but at some point I realized that I was with some other interns in front of Opera house, standing in a perfect line and doing what one usually does after beer and trying to decide, which opera we should go to the next day. I guess this is how Mozarts, Beethovens and others got their inspiration in arts and music returning from the warm springs in Baden. At least, I did receive my inspiration. I even listened to violin some girl was playing on the street and did charity; despite my situation did not much differ from the girl’s. Ironical was to see the advert of Federal Chancellor Schüssel next to her, saying HE CAN. I guess, whatever he can does not consider poor students of arts and music. I did not tell you, Austria has elections. I don’t know who is going to win, but my favourite candidate is Westenhaler. His banners are always easy to understand, for example: Sozial Staat statt Zuwanderung, Österreich statt Schüssel und Brüssel, Daham statt Islam, Deutsch statt Ich nix verstehn and etc. He is good looking and always smiling to you from the banners. But to be serious it is actually sad, as much as those populous leaders in some countries making so much fuss about Pope’s speech and intention.
Oh, and I should tell you about going to bars on the Danube. It is very beautiful there, and cocktails are half a price. So, despite the fact that usually I am tired to death after work, and the only thing I want, is to eat and to sleep, I drop by to those Danube bars to try some cocktails, and perhaps increase my knowledge in them.
And last weekend, I also did some institutional going-out, that is I went to Best Wine Cellar in Vienna, took part in Oktoberfest Party in Bermuda triangle, and went to Flex, one of the best (and expensive) European discos. There are many cultural and night activities in Vienna that everytime one has to choose one and give up many others. And this is the only thing here, which sucks!

So, this is all I wanted to report, so far.
Peace!

Firdavs

PS: I dont understand why I can't upload photos to my blog. I will try it tomorrow from the office.

Facilities

Just another short post on the great facilities they have in the UN buildings. Sometimes I have feeling that all the things were organised in such a way so that no employee would have to leave working place for some minor things, like getting cash and doing banking, sending a post, calling overseas, buying magazines, leaving for consulting touristic agents on where to go for vacation, or what opera is played in Vienese theatres. And these are only things that drag my attention. I am sure there is much more than that. There are also many courses offered, starting from those on HIV/Aids to languages and etc. The only thing missing is a supermarket, i guess.
Another great facility is cafeteria. I will shortly mention that too, as my friend Irene had already asked me about the food. So, because employees come from all the corners of the world you and me can and can't imagine (e.g. Kyrgizstan, Vanuatu or Palau), also tastes for food are various. So, basically you have all cuisines here. Japanese, Chinese, Indian (yummy:), Indonesian, Italian, German, French, Austrian, American (can one say that in case of tasteless snacks?) and many many more. It is only my small experience with various cuisines makes the list short i guess. And what is also important is that prices are quite tolerable. Well, not for all cuisines, though. I mean Sushi is more expensive than in a famous Japanese restaurant of Vienna. Despite, the amount seems sometimes to be intended for weight watchers, Austrian bread solves this minor problem.
So, guys, those of you who find time to come to Vienna, let it be when I am here, or some other time, make sure to get there during the lunch time. Many tourists come here, and take the opportunity. It is my hint for you.
So, I guess that was it for today. More interesting posts are to come.
Peace to all!

Firdavs

Another week

Hello Everyone!

Yesterday I was kicked out of my room, not because I played on someone's nerves or something, but because it was my rooms turn for renovation. So, at 4 o'clock I had nothing to do, and decided to explore some of the UN buildings and facilities therein. And soon or later, that is in half an hour, I ended up in the bar drinking fine Czech beer in total solitude. But for many workers the day was over already at 5 and in a slow pace the bar was being packed by people from different corners of the world. The bar got very noisy. The bar attenders and waiters, all of Arab origin, were rushing to serve drinks to all servicemen of peace with that famous oriental hospitality and diplomacy(no, not like those in Brussels). Soon, I realized that the majority of the gathered people in the bar were interns. There were at least 30 of them, talking about the tasks they were given or plans for the evening, including for most which club to go next, and gossiping about new interns. But what was common for all is that they were heavily drinking. No wonder, prices here are unbelievably rational and low. Now, I know why there was an advert offering help to those addicted to alcohol. It is simply so cheap that one can't stop ordering. I was also persuaded by the prices to have more beer and order another one, and so on that I ended up having had 7 bottles of beer and 2 glasses of wine. Prince(read previous post) who joined me later together with Kathryn and Veronica told that it is an international area, so they don't pay taxes. But for me this arguement was too weak, cause I bought cigarettes and they were of the same price as outside of the building.
Well, now I have to hit the road to Innenstadt, mates. The weather is so fine today.
Wish you all productive internship.
Best regards,
Firdavs

Living next to Royal family members

Hello!

This will be a short post about the thing I have just got to know. I told you about the party on Saturday, and that there were interns among them, and three at least study international relations in the US. And the guy, who comes originally from Ghana, turned out to be a member of Royal family, according to my landlord. One would expect that people from rich families are careless about knowledge and stuff, but opposite to my speculations, he is very intelligent and smart. I had this impression during the talk. I have to talk with His Majesty again. Though, it seems he talks too much. :-)
And I have not still found any flat for October :-(.
That's all for now.

Ciao!

Firdavs

My first week

Hello Everyone!

My first week in the UNOV and Austria is over. So far, I did only a "quick-run-through-sightseeings-you don't know" tour in Vienna, and was not still able to get the real life of Vienna. One thing I noticed here at once when I was on the bus and U-bahn, is that they have signs saying to give a seat to elder people, women with children and so on. They even say this on the bus on a microphone next to announcing next stop. So, people immediately stand up, when an elder person gets on the bus. I loved it, as it reminded me of being back home.
That I don't go to the touristic spot in Vienna was also partially due to the fact that I had to start with my internship tasks. Moreover, I will have to work today in order to get it done and show to my supervisor. She is from Russia, and very nice, always gives me hints on everything, that is work and life in Vienna, and provides me with some enlightening information on the work of the UN, which I like a lot. I am given a desk, a computer, a UN e-mail address, and a phone. I sit in a big room for volunteers, together with other intern, Rosa Alba, coming from Italy. Was a surprise that she also does European studies, and not surprisingly, she is not happy with it.
The whole UN is multicultural and international, which is also exciting about it. Though, I have noticed that in cafeteria, people tend to gather or sit at tables according to national and lingual factors, that is, Spanish speaking in one corner, Indians at the other and etc. It is quite understandable, though.
A week in the UN, but I still do not get the structure of the buildings. Actually, it seems very easy, at first, you have a central building in a circular shape, and then you have three more buildings of a bad triangular shape attached to it. And these are indeed huge buildings, with at least 15 floors and some good 200 meters length each.
But what I don't get is that, when you are inside of the buildings, and walking through the corridor there are usually elevators, toilets and these kind of things in the middle. And if you want to go around it, you have to be careful. Both sides lead you in different directions, and it is like that every 20 meters or so. That is you just want to go around an elevator from the left side and your colleague the right side, you will find out, as soon as elevator wall ends that you lost your colleague, and you are in a different part of the building. My supervisor told me that she needed 6 months to learn it all. I once already confusingly got in the room of the Head of the UN office át Vienna! Well, good that I was stopped by his secretary. The number of the room and the floor - all correct, but different part of the building.
What a confusal. But seeing other interns who have been here for the last 3-4 months, I think they had things even worse. There are a lot of students specialized in International Relations and International Economics doing internship. The ones I know are from LSE and Syracouse. And among them at least one representative of ICEUS from Fulda:-).
By the way yesterday, I finally had some wine with other interns living in the building where I do, and finally got to know all my neighbours, except for a girl next door, who makes strange sounds in her room but never comes out. So it was quite a good evening yesterday.
And now, if you excuse me, I am going to take a fine bath. After I came to Germany, for objective reasons, I could have only a shower. So it's been a whole year! Unbelievable!
Peace!

Firdavs

Reading news

Hello Everyone!
I am totally in the UN process now, but still I find time to read some news from home. And they say that:
International Football Association announced the rankings of the national football teams, and unfortunately, for Uzbek fans, the national team has gone 4 ranks down compared to that of the previous one. It is ranked 54th with 564 points. Among other members of Asian Football Confederation, it is 5th after Australia, Iran, Japan and South Korea, where Australia is on the 37th place with 708 points.
At least it was good to hear that Uzbek proffessional boxer in medium weight, Kahramon Arzikulov, won the intercontinental championship belt of the World Boxing Organization and the belt of the world champion of the International Boxing Association.
Will write about Vienna and my internship next time. Pitifully, don't have much time to explore the city and night life here. But as soons as I take new pictures and there will be new stories to tell you will be the first ones with whom I will share it.
Peace!
Firdavs.

Finally in Vienna

Hello everyone!
I got to Vienna eventually. Though, have to be honest have not seen the city yet. Will do it only tomorrow, Sunday must be a better day to go sightseeing.
Got a flat. Damn far away from the Innercity, and all those touristic spots. 30 minutes with a bus to get to my organisation. Actually, it is 22nd Bezirk (quarter). I think, if I shout loud enough, inhabitants of Bratislava would hear me, and not because I can shout so loudly, but it must be simply very close. The landlord actually lied to me about the price, saying that I did not tell him that I was coming to Vienna for such a short time(I wrote him E-mail telling exact date of my stay, but forgot about it when he told me that), and so charged me more money than I actually was hoping for. Actually twice the price of my flat in Fulda. And even this room I have only for six weeks, despite he offered me a room...in the attic for October, I will try to find something in between.
But have to tell the truth, the room is indeed cool. I really love it. Posting some photos. Only that it is far away from the city, bothers me a bit. It means no going out late at night. In order to reach the last bus, have to start moving from the center around 10 pm. It sucks. Means more work, and surfing on the internet staying in the room. It says that "Inter" is on the first place, second "Barcelona", and third is "Liverpool".
And...second best team in Asia is Pakhtakor! It is a Tashkent(Uzbek capital) football club, an Asian Football champion, with really cool uniform, I still wonder, why I did not buy one of those T-shirts, when I was heading to Europe? 5 of their players used to play for the Soviet Union in world championships and etc. Unfortunately, due to lack of good investment they couldn't yet go further than Asian continent. They are currently on the 121st place. 26 places higher than Eintracht Frankfurt, 10 higher than FC København, 2 and 3 places higher than Panathinaikos Athens and Galatasaray SK İstanbul and just two places behind FK Austria Wien :-(. Thus, you can judge how bad or good the Pakhtakor team is :-).

Another thing I wanted to say that I am finally going to Vienna. Though, have some difficulties with a place to stay. Have nothing for the first three days and have also nothing yet for October. Will see, train stations always have nice places to stay (I can already imagine, lying on the benches with a suit and tie on...:-)
My next post most probably will be about the train station in Vienna and dirty benches, or cheap hostel searching.
See you guys!

Firdavs

PS: Don't forget to put your locations on the map, put by Becky on ICEUS blog. It is very easy, requires 3 minutes at most.

Nothing can ruin my mood today

Today, in the morning I got up and thought, what a nice day, sun is shining directly on my face, must be nine o'clock or later already. But I don't feel tired, like one usually does after a long time sleeping. So I decided for myself, it will be a one good day. Then, two things happened that made my day shine even brighter.
First, my old German mate Irene called me, I was really happy to hear her voice. As usual, it was really relaxing to talk with her, remember good and bad times in my homecountry. Actually, sometimes it seems that it a kind of changing places. Because I used to help her with translation and logistics, and also try my best to support her at her low times, which actually was quite not easy, as cultural differences exist even in such issues. But I would try to cheer her up, with some random stupidities of my own experiences or those of my friends. I am in Germany now, and it is, as if, her turn. I am really thankful to her, because she called at the right time.
And there was a second thing that happened in a line of nice things. It was a postcard from Bec. Thanks for the postcards, I am receiving them all! I really love it! A big hug from me, I really miss you too, and I am also happy for the progresses you are doing and steps you are taking on the way to achieve your goals;-). (By the way, can you please send me your home address via e-mail again. I have it already, but I am not sure if I wrote it properly, as your handwritting seems to have australian accent either:-).
And of course, it made me again confident that the day is going to be wonderful. Well, I have to be a bit careful, otherwise, I might get run over by a car, that would not be wonderful:-).
Another thing I wanted to say, is that I am sorry, if my previous post turned out to insult anyone. I really did not mean too. I know I might have sounded a bit like Akhmadinedjad. I was a bit impulsive, so to say. Will hold the church in the village.
Anyway, I wish all of you who are there, doing internship or on the eve of it, a lot of fun. Hope you will love the experience you are all having. And I will do the same in my turn.
Peace out there!

New Blog

Originally written on: Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Hi everyone!
I am back in bloggery. Though, now without internet connection. So, wont be able to make posts too often. I am glad that the number of the blog infected is increasing among iceussies, which will actually bring to the total uselessness of the Wisdom blog.
Nothing new has been happening in our small town lately. Only that we planned with Kristina to go to a techno concert on Saturday. It will be a good relaxation i hope, as I am really done now with all that organizational stuff for my internship.
Still have not gotten my visa for Austria, no flat found, no health-insurance for overseas yet made. Schengen gives me only the right to travel to Austria, but not to make a traineeship. It sometimes sucks to be a third country national. You need a permission or a document even if you want to fart, sorry for that, it is just too hot to think or to do any activity here in Germany. By the way, it is quite funny, now that I realize, that this will be second foreign country for me where I actually will live for more than two months. Actually, back on my return to my homeland I can say that I lived in both of those countries who have started or were involved in starting of both of the World Wars that broke out in the last century.
I know not much about Austria, actually. No I am lying. I know that Vienna is supposed to have world-famous cakes. Though, this does not interest me at all. I hate cakes, because I always have to control myself, and stop eating too much, as otherwise I eventually vomit.
Another thing I know about Vienna, is that Ottoman turks were stopped here from further enlargement of their Empire. They were promised riches and pretty Austrian women, but one of the two must have dissappointed them and they returned back home. On my arrival in Vienna, I will tell exactly which one of them was a turning point in the European history.
Oh, and yes, to make my life in Vienna more beautiful, I was told that German spoken in Austria sounds like Bavarian. Hmm, I had to recall the man from the bar in Bamberg, where I was with Ragil, Lucy and her friend. I think I would easily understand a gorilla rather than this guy. So Austrian German is told to be same hard. Well, it means I will have to employ all my talents of mimic and gesturing for the next months. Another reason why all those who have studied abroad usually look so emotional and use many gestures after they return home. I can argue with anyone who thinks this hypothesis is wrong.
I think, i have to hit the road home now. Besides, I am distracted now by loud Yankees making summer university here. These Gringoes are quite funny. They all did military here, and now decided to return for vacations "to mount a couple of Germans". All they mounted so far was a big pile of beer bottles in their flat, which is so stinky that even I living one floor above can smell alcohol breeze. Anyway, the point is, that I don't sympathise my president at all, but I thank him that he kicked out American base from my country. I am not sure if there exists such a precedent.
I am now also hungry. So I wish everyone a productive experience with internship, and my advice, never decide where you gonna do your internship, when it is only 3 weeks left to its actual start.
Peace out!

Firdavs.
